BookkeeperCollect vs Dext
Dext and BookkeeperCollect get lumped together because both talk about "getting documents." They do different jobs.
Dext (formerly Receipt Bank; product lineage includes Dext Prepare) is a bookkeeping automation suite. It captures receipts, invoices, and statements, extracts and categorizes the data, runs expense workflows, matches bank activity, and publishes into accounting software. It is built for accountants, bookkeepers, and businesses who want capture-to-ledger automation. IRIS Software Group completed its acquisition of Dext in December 2024.
BookkeeperCollect is narrower on purpose. It helps you request missing documents with checklists, a branded no-login client portal, and automatic reminders. It does not OCR, read documents with AI, pull bank feeds, manage expenses, or replace your practice stack.
If your pain is "clients won't send what I asked for," that is a request problem. If your pain is "I have piles of paperwork to extract and post," that is a capture problem. Diagnose that first; the tool choice gets easier.

Who each is for
Dext fits practices and businesses that want an end-to-end capture pipeline: mobile scan, email, upload, Invoice Fetch, WhatsApp, bank feeds, statement extraction, expense approvals (and mileage on some plans), then publish to Xero, QuickBooks Online, Sage, and other platforms. Dext lists 36+ accounting integrations, including Xero, QuickBooks, and Sage. Clients who already live in the Dext mobile app will feel at home.
BookkeeperCollect fits solo and small bookkeepers who already have a capture or accounting workflow — or who still get PDFs by email — and mainly need a cleaner way to ask for what is missing. You build a checklist from a template, send clients to a branded portal (no login), and let reminders do the chase. You are not buying OCR, bank matching, practice management, invoicing, e-sign, chat, a mobile app, API/Zapier, SOC 2/HIPAA, or a custom-domain white-label layer. Those are out of scope on purpose.
Pricing shape differs too. BookkeeperCollect is Starter at $29/mo and Pro at $39/mo, with a 14-day trial and no card required. Custom logo and colors are available on Pro and during the active trial; Starter uses BookkeeperCollect styling. Dext's US business pricing lists $25.21/mo when billed annually ($302.50/year), excluding applicable taxes, for 250 documents/mo and 5 users on the base plan. Monthly billing is also available; check the pricing selector for its current rate. Dext offers a 14-day trial without payment details. Practice Essentials and Practice Advanced are per-client plans; use Dext's plan builder for a practice quote.
Side-by-side: request vs capture
| Need | BookkeeperCollect | Dext |
|---|---|---|
| Core job | Request missing docs via checklist | Capture, extract, categorize, match, publish |
| How clients send | No-login portal; custom logo and colors on Pro or during trial | Mobile app, email, upload, WhatsApp, feeds, fetch |
| Reminders | Automatic reminder sequences on open slots | Paperwork requests / app notifications; Missing paperwork report (Practice Advanced) to export and chase |
| Bank / OCR | No bank feeds, no OCR | Bank feeds, statement extraction, AI capture |
| Expense workflows | No | Yes (approvals; mileage on some plans) |
| Accounting publish | No integrations | Publishes to major accounting platforms |
| Mobile app | No | Yes |
| Best metaphor | "Here's everything I still need from you" | "Snap it, extract it, match it, post it" |
Document requests are not the same product feature. Dext's "Request paperwork" flow for unmatched bank transactions pushes to the recipient's Dext mobile app. Recipients who are not on that app do not appear as selectable recipients for those bank paperwork requests; you may be left exporting a report and chasing outside the product. There are also email requests from supplier statements, and Practice Advanced's Missing paperwork report for exporting a chase list. Useful — especially if the client already uses Dext — but it is not a branded no-login checklist portal with automatic reminder sequences the way BookkeeperCollect works.
BookkeeperCollect starts from the opposite end: you define slots (W-9, prior-year return, Q3 statements, that one missing receipt), send a portal link, and schedule reminders for missing items. Reminders stop when the request is complete or its reminder limit is reached, and you can pause them. It will not extract line items or match a bank feed.
For deeper reading on the chase itself: stop chasing clients for receipts and get clients to send documents on time.
When to pick Dext instead of BookkeeperCollect
Be honest with yourself if most of your week looks like this:
- Clients (or staff) already snap receipts into a mobile app and you want extraction plus publish to Xero/QBO/Sage.
- You need bank feeds, bank matching, or bank statement extraction as part of the same tool.
- Expense approvals and mileage claims matter.
- You want one suite that captures from email, upload, Invoice Fetch, WhatsApp, and feeds — not a separate request portal.
- Your practice is already standardized on Dext (or moving that way under the IRIS umbrella) and clients will install the app.
In those cases, BookkeeperCollect is the wrong primary buy. Dext is doing the heavy automation job. Buying a checklist tool will not replace OCR, categorization, or bank match.
When BookkeeperCollect is the better fit
Pick BookkeeperCollect when the bottleneck is asking, not reading:
- You already extract elsewhere (or still key from PDFs) and the real delay is clients who ghost your email threads.
- You want a clear checklist of slots, not a transaction-by-transaction paperwork request tied to bank matches.
- Clients should upload without installing an app or creating another login.
- You want automatic reminders so you are not manually nudging every open item.
- You are a solo or small bookkeeper who wants a focused $29–$39/mo tool, not another suite seat.
- You have Spanish-speaking clients: you pick English or Spanish per request, and that client's portal, request email, reminders and completion receipt are all in that language (your own dashboard language is a separate setting).
BookkeeperCollect can also sit beside Dext for firms that keep capture for receipts but still need a cleaner year-end or onboarding pack: engagement letter items, ID, prior returns, schedules that never hit a bank feed. Just know BC does not integrate with Dext or your ledger — files still move the way you move them today.
FAQ
Is BookkeeperCollect a Dext alternative?
Only for the document-request slice. If you mean "alternative to Receipt Bank / Dext Prepare for capture and extraction," no. BookkeeperCollect does not do OCR, AI document reading, bank feeds, expense capture, or publish-to-accounting. It is an alternative when your search for a "Dext alternative for document requests" is really about chasing missing files with a portal and reminders.
Can Dext replace a checklist portal?
Partly, for clients already on the Dext mobile app and for bank-linked missing paperwork. The Missing paperwork report on Practice Advanced helps you see gaps and export a chase list. It is not the same as a branded no-login checklist with automatic reminder sequences. If half your clients will never install the app, plan for that gap.
What does BookkeeperCollect cost vs Dext?
BookkeeperCollect: Starter $29/mo, Pro $39/mo, 14-day trial, no card. Dext business (US): $25.21/mo billed annually ($302.50/year), excluding applicable taxes, with 250 docs/mo and 5 users on the base plan. Check Dext's pricing page for monthly billing and its plan builder for Practice Essentials/Advanced. The limits differ too: Dext Business scales by documents and users; BookkeeperCollect Starter is unlimited clients with 20 active requests, and Pro is unlimited on both.
Do I need both?
Some practices might: Dext (or similar) for capture-to-ledger, BookkeeperCollect for structured asks that are not receipt snaps. Others need only one. If you only fight the chase, start with the request tool. If you only fight data entry, start with capture.
Is BookkeeperCollect "AI bookkeeping"?
No. No AI doc reading, no auto-categorization, no magic bank match. Templates, slots, portal, reminders. Slightly boring. Often what the chase actually needed.
